Why a Well?

Water wells have played a significant role in the history of books and storytelling. For generations, they have served as a symbol of community, life, and hope. They have been the inspiration for countless stories, myths, and legends — connecting people to their ancestors and cultural heritage.

While water wells are a source of life — providing clean, potable water to people across the world — they carry a deeper meaning in the cultural imagination. In many cultures, wells are revered for their spiritual qualities, used as settings for weddings, celebrations, and meetings, and associated with supernatural beings like genies and fairies.

One famous example in children's literature is the wishing well: the idea of throwing a coin in and making a wish appears again and again in folk tales, contemporary books, and movies. In 'The Water of Life,' a young prince must retrieve a magical elixir from a well to save his dying father, facing riddles and obstacles that teach him courage, perseverance, and wisdom.

Wells in stories also teach children lessons about charity, kindness, and gratitude. In 'The Five Chinese Brothers,' brothers share a single cup of water from a well to save the life of the youngest — a story about helping others and working together. Across cultures and centuries, wells have helped people overcome challenges, connect communities, and pass down values.

We chose the name StoryWell Books for the significance water wells have had in human life and in storytelling. Like a well, we hope our books are a source — deep, sustaining, communal — drawing stories from the depths of human experience and sharing them with the world.
